Hamad Airport Launches Sunflower Program
Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha has introduced the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, a new initiative designed to provide better support for passengers with non-visible disabilities as they travel through the airport.
The voluntary program allows travelers to wear a Sunflower symbol, discreetly indicating they may need extra assistance—such as more time, clearer communication, or additional support—without having to share personal details about their condition.
Creating a More Inclusive Airport Experience
HIA stated that the Sunflower program is part of its wider accessibility efforts, aimed at making the airport experience more inclusive, predictable, and comfortable for all passengers.
Francois Bourienne, Senior Vice President of Commercial, Strategy and Customer Experiences at Hamad International Airport, highlighted the airport’s commitment to ensuring journeys are built around autonomy, dignity, and consistency, while continuing to invest in facilities and services that support diverse needs.
Support Available Across Key Passenger Touchpoints
As a Sunflower-enabled airport, HIA has integrated the program across major passenger areas for arrivals, departures, and transfers. The Sunflower symbol is displayed throughout the terminal to signal that assistance is available for those who may require it.
Airport-Wide Awareness and Staff Training
HIA confirmed that awareness of the program has been expanded across airport operations, including Qatar Airways Group, airline partners, retail outlets, and service providers. Staff have also been trained to recognize the Sunflower symbol and respond with appropriate support when needed.
Andy Faulkner, CEO of Topland (the exclusive Middle East partner of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower), welcomed HIA’s participation, noting that the airport’s involvement strengthens efforts to improve awareness, accessibility, and understanding for travelers with hidden disabilities.
A Global Initiative Supporting Hidden Disabilities
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program is already in use at airports and transport hubs worldwide, helping individuals with conditions that may not be immediately visible, including cognitive, neurological, and sensory differences.
